Morrisons plans further job cuts

Morrisons is expected to announce a second batch of job cuts at Safeway before the end of the month.

Sources said a further 200 to 300 jobs would go, as the supermarket look to move all head office staff into a purpose-built headquarters in Bradford in the next 18 months.

News of the latest job cuts emerged as it was revealed that Morrisons executive directors received pay rises in excess of 26 per cent last year. The hefty increments compared to a more modest 13 per cent rise in pre-tax profits to £319.9m for the year to the end of March 2004.

Store operations director Mark Gunter received the biggest pay rise, up 37 per cent to £385,000. Sir Ken Morrison was awarded a 27 per cent pay rise taking his package to £548,000.
