In its 41st annual report and accounts, New Covent Garden Market announced an operating surplus of £2.2m to the year ended March 31, 2002.

The turnover for physically-handled goods in 2001 rose to £396 million, of which almost £50m was in non-horticultural products, while the total market trade for the year 2001 was in excess of £500m. The occupation of trading space remained high at 93 per cent.

The market's location continued to offer logistical advantages for businesses in the supply and distribution of fresh foodstuffs. Progress was maintained in broadening the market's activities into non-horticultural products with the opening of the market's first butcher.

New Covent Garden Market continues to be an important centre for importers and agents serving the horticultural trade, and their activities are estimated to be £110m.

Taking account of all areas ranging from fresh produce to flowers and non-horticultural foods, the total trade value of the market in 2001 is thought to exceed £500m.
