Traders and representatives from New Smithfield Wholesale Market were out in force at hospitality trade exhibition Northern Restaurant & Bar 2010 this week.

With the raw ingredients for 1,000 meals bought and sold at the Manchester site each day, the market took a stand at the event to raise its profile in the North West and unveil its newly branded image to the hospitality trade.

Four wholesalers were present on the stand, which drew together elements of the market’s main commodities - fresh fruit and vegetables, flowers, catering services and fish.

Lee Vallender, wholesale commercial manager for Manchester City Council, told FPJ: “We have such good produce on offer here in Manchester and it is surprising the number of people at the show that hadn’t heard of us before today.

“Today, we are aiming to meet restaurateurs, bar owners and ultimately, buyers and chefs. We are trying to promote not only our produce but also our history and lineage with our new brand, putting the market back at the heart of the food industry. in Manchester.”
