Sainsbury's has launched a new range of pollen-free lilies. After 15 years of research, Asiatic Sphinx, Asiatic Aphrodite and Asiatic Fatamongana will be available in store from early August.

Sainsbury's flower buyer Vanessa Hughes said: 'A pollen free gene is extremely rare which has made the research incredibly complicated and the success even more remarkable. We are hoping to extend the success across oriental lilies next year and then look to move to other types of flower in the future.' Professor Jean Emberlin director of the National Pollen Research unit said: 'Hayfever is a serious problem for millions of people in Britain, reducing the quality of life throughout the summer months. This breakthrough is fantastic news which means that sufferers will be able to enjoy flowers in their homes for the first time.'
