Consumers are increasingly sceptical about the benefits of organic food, according to a new study of the UK market.

Despite 35 per cent growth in sales of organic food and drink in 2001, the report by Mintel says a growing number of people are cynical about claims that its it is healthier for you and better for the environment.

A survey of 1,000 adults by the market research analyst showed that last year 18 per cent of people believed organic produce safer than the conventional equivalent, compared with 22 per cent in 1999.

The same two-year period also saw younger consumers become more dubious about the advantages of organic food. Of those 15-24 year olds surveyed last year, just 11 per cent of thought it better for you, compared with 20 per cent in 1999.

However, the study also revealed that consumers in Scotland are looking more favourably on organic food, with a fifth now considering it better for you, up by eight per cent at the time of the previous survey.
