Scotherbs rewards schoolchildren

Perthshire growers Scotherbs have rewarded primary school children in the area for their work to promote the benefits of herbs by donating a new picnic table.

The company donated the table to pupils at Longforgan Primary School for their outdoor classroom, after they worked on projects including recipe booklets, short animations and cartoons to show the natural benefits, flavours and ecology of herbs.

The business has been collaborating with the school since May on projects that were all specially tailored to suit several areas of the school curriculum, including language, problem solving, ICT, enterprise, citizenship and art. The projects have given the children the opportunity to pay a visit to the Scotherbs premises to see the fields, pack-house and distribution systems in place.

The school’s head teacher, Mrs Reid, said: “All of our children can identify the most common herbs and have had an opportunity to taste them and find out where they came from. I’ve had many comments from parents about what a great difference the project has made to the children’s eating habits - all for the good! We will use the new table in our outdoor classroom area and it will be a welcome addition to our facilities.”

Fiona Lamotte, Scottherbs’ managing director, added: “The amount of work that the children have put in is really overwhelming. They have produced recipe booklets, short animations and cartoons and other resources to express what they’ve learned. This has been above and beyond what we had originally hoped for the partnership and has shown that with a little bit of team work, big differences can be made. This is definitely something we will be keen to maintain with our local school and roll out to other schools in the near future.”
