Consultation has opened on a proposed EU Soil Framework Directive and initial Regulatory Impact Assessment. The drive was launched last week by Defra, the Scottish Executive and the Welsh Assembly Government.

The consultation hopes to answer questions like: whether a directive is needed to meet the needs of protecting soil functions in the UK; how the measures could be improved; and on the costs and benefits of the measures if the Directive were adopted and implemented.

The proposed Directive is broad in scope and will affect a range of sectors from agriculture to the property and construction sectors as well as enforcement agencies like local authorities.

Responses to the consultation should be received by October 19.
