Tesco is to offer free fruit to kids in store while their parents shop.

The initiative will see a selection of fruit such as apples, soft citrus and bananas made available for parents to give to their children while they shop. It is being launched in over 800 stores and is aimed at developing healthy eating habits from a young age.

Tesco said the move was inspired by checkout colleague Maria Simpson, who suggested fruit would make a better alternative to sweets for kids to snack on during shopping trips. It trialled the initiative in Scotland before rolling out nationwide.

'We're Britain's biggest greengrocer, so we want to make it easier for parents to get their children eating more healthily,' said Tesco UK chief executive Matt Davies. 'As a dad, I know it can be tricky getting children to eat their fruit and vegetables, so we're hoping this initiative will help create healthy eating habits that will stay with children as they grow up.'

The move was welcomed by health charities, with the British Heart Foundation describing it as 'a positive step towards improving children's health throughout the UK.'
