Wealmoor has proved its credentials by bouncing back from tragedy to reposition itself among the leading pack of UK-based exotic fresh produce importers and bagging the FPJ-sponsored Importer of the Year Award at the Re:fresh Awards.

The 30-year old family-run private business is a previous winner of this award and was beset by problems in 2007 when a recently acquired site was destroyed by fire within five weeks of being purchased. The impact on individuals within the company, as well as the company itself and its customer base was huge and a disaster recovery plan was implemented to maintain operations and service.

Interim site locations and multiple moves were necessary over the next two years, as a new site was built, but Wealmoor’s infrastructure is now back in place. Simultaneously, the company has had to deal with the recession and it believes five core measures have helped it emerge stronger in a reduced field of competition.

Avnish Malde of the company told Freshinfo: "Winning this award is testament to a magnificent, loyal team that has supported the business throughout the adversities the business has experienced over the last two to three years. Customers and suppliers have also been equally supportive right throughout.

"The awards are a fitting tribute to Rati, our late chairman, who we sadly lost suddenly three weeks ago. His values and philosophy are behind everything that the business has achieved."

Dole Fresh UK Ltd and Poupart Group were both runners up for the award.
