Fruit West Cooperative and Source Certain have extended their partnership for a further five years to continue protecting the integrity of Australia’s premium Bravo apple brand through one of the world’s first scientific origin verification programmes for apples.

The Australian-developed programme independently verifies the origin of ANABP 01 apples, a variety that was developed in Western Australia, helping protect licensed growers, strengthen consumer confidence and safeguard the long-term value of the brand as it continues to grow in domestic markets.

As premium fresh produce brands continue to grow in domestic and international markets, protecting the integrity of those brands has become increasingly important for growers and marketers. Consumer expectations around provenance, authenticity and transparency continue to rise, placing greater value on independent evidence that supports origin claims before questions arise.

The renewed partnership between Fruit West Cooperative and Source Certain reinforces a long-term commitment to protecting the Bravo brand through scientific origin verification. Rather than responding to authenticity concerns after they occur, the programme is designed to independently verify that Bravo branded apples originate from licensed Australian orchards, strengthening confidence across the supply chain and helping safeguard the value of the brand.

Originally established as one of the world’s first commercial scientific origin verification programmes for horticulture, the initiative has become a benchmark for protecting premium branded produce. Throughout the year, Source Certain independently purchases Bravo apples from Australian retailers and verifies that they originate from one of the licensed ANABP 01 orchards, providing ongoing confidence in the integrity of the brand.

The programme supports Fruit West Cooperative’s investment in the long-term success of Bravo, one of Australia’s premium licensed apple varieties.

“The Bravo brand represents years of investment by growers, researchers and our industry partners,” said Ann Lyster, chair Fruit West Cooperative. “Protecting the integrity of the brand is essential as we continue to grow in Australia and international markets. Extending this partnership ensures we continue to provide confidence that every ANABP 01 apple can be independently verified back to licensed Australian orchards,”

For Source Certain, the partnership reflects a growing shift towards proactive verification across premium food supply chains.

“The ability to independently verify the fruit itself, without labels and paperwork, that it has come from one of the approved licenced orchards protects the investment made in the variety here in Western Australia and enables the protection the premium Bravo brand,” said Cameron Scadding, founder and CTO of Source Certain. “By turning provenance claims into evidence, programmes like this help protect brands, strengthen consumer trust and enable businesses and government to get ahead of risk.”

The renewed agreement also reinforces the value of collaboration between two Australian companies committed to supporting local agriculture through innovation. Together, Fruit West Cooperative and Source Certain continue to demonstrate how scientific verification can protect premium brands, support commercial growth and build confidence wherever Australian produce is sold.
