Australian glasshouse vegetable producer Nectar Farms has announced a large-scale hi-tech hydroponic glasshouse for Stawell in Victoria’s Grampians.
The 40ha site on the former Stawell Gold Mine will create 70 jobs in the town, with the Victorian state government investing A$500m as part of its Regional Jobs and Infrastructure Fund.
Located less than three hours from Melbourne and 4.5 hours from Adelaide, Nectar Farms says on it website that the location will reduce food miles and transportation costs.
Initially the glasshouse will grow three varieties of cucumbers and house a nursery to grow Nectar Farm’s seeds for its sites in Victoria and New South Wales.
Victorian minister for agriculture and regional development, Jaala Pulford, said it was fantastic news for Stawell.
“By bringing a new, hi-tech food industry to the region, it marks an exciting and important step in supporting the local community,” Pulford said. “We’re thinking of the 150 retrenched workers in Stawell and working hard to facilitate new local job opportunities.”
