Strawberry exports out of the Australian state continue to grow

The Tasmanian strawberry season has begun, starting slightly earlier this year following an unusually cold spring.

Peter Cornish, CEO of Fruit Growers Tasmania, said that consumers across Australia can expect volumes to steadily increase as more growers begin picking over the coming weeks.

“Most growers are reporting a positive start to the season,” said Cornish. “We’re pretty much back to our normal timing, although some parts of Tasmania have experienced unusually warm early spring weather, which has helped bring some fruit on a little earlier than anticipated.”

Australian production of strawberries is approximately 66,000 tonnes, with Tasmania contributing around 15 per cent of the total volume, almost 10,000 tonnes.

The majority of Tasmania’s strawberries are sold into the domestic market, but there is an increasing quantity sold overseas.

“We truly are spoilt here in Tasmania with all the wonderful high quality fresh fruit we grow. Our hard working Tasmanian growers really appreciate the support they receive right here at home and also throughout Australia and Asia,” said Cornish.

Tasmanian-grown fruit will continue to hit the market as summer comes around with raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, and cherries to look forward to in the coming weeks and months.
