Generic asparagus

Asparagus could emerge as a key export for Bangladesh, following research at the country’s Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University.

Experimental cultivation of asparagus began at the university two years ago, using seeds from Japan.

With new spores now growing from the bottom of plants, researchers believe they can develop the seed locally, producing sufficient volumes for export.

“The vegetable can be grown and exported to Europe, the US and Japan after meeting the local demand,” Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University’s Dr Foez Zamal said.

Three lines of asparagus have already been identified for cultivation in Bangladesh, Sau Asparagus-1 (Marry Washington), Sau Asparagus-2 (Green Bangla) and Sau Asparagus-3 (Welcome Dhaka).
