China has publicly said that frozen dumplings contaminated with pesticides that made 10 Japanese people ill had also caused sickness in China, the Japanese media have reported.

The statement is seen as an admission that the contamination occurred in China, even though both countries denied responsibility following the initial event.

The frozen dumplings made 10 Japanese people ill earlier this year from a chemical identified as methamidophos, a dangerous organophosphate pesticide, and caused a diplomatic crack between the two countries.

Questions from the Japanese media precipitated the statement on Wednesday, when the Chinese foreign ministry said there had been food poisoning cases in China involving the same brand and dumplings with the same chemical.

The dumplings were made by Tianyang Food company in Hebei province.

A number of food safety standards have hit the Chinese export market in the last few years, causing the country’s international reputation significant damage.
