Official data in China has recorded a significant rise in vegetable prices and other farm produce in 36 of the country's major cities.
The wholesale price of 18 types of vegetables rose 7 per cent on average in the week ending on 8 September from just one week previously.
Tomatoes recorded the largest rise of 21.1 per cent, followed by aubergine or eggplant at 18.7 per cent and romaine lettuce at 13.3 per cent.
Food costs comprise approximately one third of all prices used to calculate China's consumer price index (CPI), a primary indicator of inflation.
According to the National Bureau of Statistics, China's CPI rose 2.6 per cent year-on-year in August, down from 2.7 percent in July.
