Former Carrefour regional operations manager in China, Jerome Chevrier, will take over as managing director of Spar China based in Shanghai, effective immediately.

Chevrier will bring more than 20 years’ experience working in China to the new role, including extensive knowledge of retail operations and buying, with former roles at B&Q China and Etam Group China.

Tobias Wasmuht, managing director of Spar International, said Chevrier would bring the necessary experience to further grow and consolidate the business.

“China’s size, scale and economic power means that it is one of the most fast paced and dynamic retail markets in the world,” Wasmuht said. “Having established a significant presence in China since 2004, Spar still sees a great detail of exciting potential for further expansion in the country.”

Spar China chairman Wang Pei-huan added that the board was delighted to appoint Chevrier to the new role.

“We believe his exceptional retail credentials, almost two decades’ experience of living and working in China and Jerome’s extensive business network are all real assets to the business,” he said.

Spar now operates more than 12,500 stores across 46 countries, opening its first supermarket in Shandong China in November 2004.

The retailer has continued to grow its operations in the country, partnering with companies within China to build the brand in Shandong, Guangdong, Shanxi and Inner Mongolia, Beijing, Sichuan, Henan, Zhangjiakou and Yunnan.
