UK asparagus breeder Global Plant Genetics has partnered with producer and distributor Fox Seeds to exclusively distribute its varieties in the European market.

Fox Seeds produces and distributes asparagus varieties developed by the breeding programme at the University of Guelph in Canada.

Guelph Millennium has been the most popular hybrid to date but the programme is also launching three new cultivars: Guelph Eclipse, Guelph Evolution and Guelph Equinox. Seed production of these varieties is being expanded to meet demand by asparagus growers in temperate regions around the world.

Jamie Petchell of Global Plant Genetics said: “This is very exciting news for us as we develop a well-rounded asparagus portfolio. The breeding programme at the University of Guelph and the seed production at Fox Seeds are world-renowned for their professionalism and delivery of excellent asparagus hybrids.

“We are eager to further the development of the programme through increased seed distribution across Europe, working with as wide as possible range of nurseries and growers.”

Executive director of Fox Seeds, Bernt Solymár, said: “We see this as a new dawn in our asparagus development in Europe. We are excited to have reached this agreement with Global Plant Genetics and to have ‘boots on the ground’ in Europe.

“We look forward to working closely with them to develop seed sales over the European Continent. Asparagus is a long-term investment for growers, and we were looking for a partner with sufficient technical skills to ensure that both nurseries and growers make the most of our hybrids. GPG provides that for us.”
