Luis Schmidt, president of the Chilean federation of fruit exporters, is holding discussions with Chilean president Ricardo Lagos about the continuous drop of the peso against the US dollar.
The move follows mounting concerns from Chilean growers, anxious at having an increasingly weak currency to trade with.
However, Patricio Rojas, an economist from the university Finis Terrae, said that variables other than the strength of the dollar are affecting growers such as prices, demands and interest rates.
He argued that exporters are still capable of continuing production on a competitive level for the rest of the year and that fluctuations on the exchange rate have not been big enough to justify any action from the Chilean government.
