Organic Farmers and Growers (OF&G) has recently given approval to two new naturally derived insect control treatments from Certis.

Described as the UK’s first biological control targeting codling moth, CyD-X (Cydia pomonella granulovirus) has gained unrestricted approval for use on farms operating under OF&G. The product is specifically formulated as a spray treatment for apples and pears and is said to deliver control with no adverse effects on beneficial insects.

OF&G also gave restricted organic use to Spruzit, a pesticide which is derived from natural pyrethrum, for use on edible and non-edible crops.

Under the restrictions growers must seek a written derogation from their certification body before using the pesticide. In their application growers must justify whey they need to use Spruzit and what controls they have tried previously before resorting to pyrethrum.

Certis has published new technical product information sheets detailing the recommendations for use and their features. Growers can find the information at www.certiseurope.co.uk.

Certis’ general manager, Peter Hingley, explained: “These products are cleared for use in organic production in other countries in Europe and now UK growers now have more options for control, helping them to remain competitive.”
