A tray of lettuces will be grown using car-powered aquaponics

A ground-breaking installation at The Design Museum will demonstrate how fuel cell technology in a car can power an aquaponics system.

A Hyundai hydrogen fuel cell car will be linked up to a fish tank, which in turn will connect to a tray of lettuces. Water vapour from the car’s emissions condenses into the water in the tank, and then minerals from fish waste is used to grow vegetables on the mini-farm.

The installation launches as a private event on October 21 in the exhibition area outside The Design Museum at Shad Thames.

Natasha Waddington, head of PR at Hyundai, said the installation was designed to show that the emissions of the vehicle are nothing but water. “It is a visual representation of what fuel-cell technology can do,” she said.

She added: “Aquaponics is starting to build in momentum and it’s an area people are starting to experiment in.”

Aquaponics is a sustainable farming method using a combination of hydroponics (growing plants in water) and aquaculture (raising fish in tanks).
