Jersey Royals potatoes

Potato farmers in Jersey are having their crops ruined by eel worms, one prominent grower has claimed.

The pests are more prevalent in the island because they are becoming more difficult to combat, Steve Labey told ITV News.

The pests not only attack crops, but their cysts remain in the soil, meaning they can infect future crops too.

Labey told ITV News: 'Our biggest concern is eel worms. We used to be able to tackle them with specific chemicals, but they are no longer available. I'm now having to rotate my land and rest certain fields, which is expensive.'
