Cornerways Nursery British Tomato Week 2015

Competition was fierce in the group stages of Cornerways' tomato competition

Tomato grower Cornerways Nursery has this week hosted a tomato eating competition to help promote British Tomato Week, which began on Monday (18 May).

The competition, which was created using guidelines set for a typical eating competition, saw participants eat six tomatoes in 60 seconds, with each tomato benchmarked at 80g.

There were two qualifying rounds in the weeks leading up to the event, with three finalists entered against general manager Patrick Harte in the final instalment this week.

“The participants have been great sports throughout and are an absolute credit to how well the competition went yesterday afternoon,” said Cornerways greenhouse administrator, Danielle Grief.

British Tomato Week, which is organised by the British Tomato Growers Association (BTGA) and finishes this Friday (22 May), has seen growers, schools and retailers across the country hold a variety of events and promotion activities.

Retailers and farm shops have applied for point-of-sale promotion, including British Tomato Week labels and Union Jack boxes, while several schools are organising ‘Tomato Days’ where pupils can taste and cook with British tomatoes.

This week the BTGA has also launched its new website, which is designed to be more user-friendly and suitable for smartphone devices.
