Raspberry sector is in high health

Raspberry volumes are expected to be up 31 per cent on last year, while sales have risen 16 per cent to reach £183 million [52 w/e 21 June, KWP].

Since 2010, the total volume of British raspberries has risen by 50 per cent, industry body British Summer Fruits (BSF) said, ahead of 30 per cent growth on strawberries.

Due to the increase in demand, BSF said it anticipates further plantings above the current 2,200 acres dedicated to raspberry cultivation in the UK.

It also credited extensive investment and new breeding programmes, leading to the development of more robust varieties that can be used in two-crop cycles per year, extending the cultivating season.

“The rising popularity of British raspberries is due to the high quality of varieties that are being produced,” said BSF chairman, Laurence Olins. “The varieties available are now stronger than they were five years ago and consumers are confident in the quality of the product.”

Raspberry growing conditions have been good, BSF said, with colder April nights providing optimal cool temperatures for early raspberry growth, while a warm July has helped develop sweetness.
