Bartosz Produce World winner

Some truly noteworthy 'above and beyond the call of duty' acts have been acknowledged at a fresh produce giant's annua staff awards ceremony.

For example, the 'Colleague of the Year Award' at this year’s Pride of Produce World Awardswent to Bartosz Slysz, from Produce World’s Chatteris site.

He was praised for his attitude during the onion harvest when he turned out at all hours to take in loads from the company’s growers. Slysz began work at the site as an agency worker, but was reportedly so determined to qualify for a permanent position, that he arranged training in his own time and at his own expense.

Speaking at the prize-giving ceremony, Produce World Group HR director David Frost, said: “Every year these awards shine a light on some fantastic examples of individuals and teams who go over and above the requirements of their everyday jobs to deliver the products and service that our customers require. This year we have seen some great examples of exactly that, particularly in the new 'Customer First' categories.”

Produce World's Swinderby site team won the 'Team of the Year' award. It was announced in February that Produce World’s roots business would be transferred to its Isleham site, with the Swinderby factory closing: 'Despite this, the team showed exemplary behaviour, ensuring all customer orders were met to the highest standards, and that there was a smooth transfer of the business to Isleham,' Frost said.

Business engagement manager Sheldon Peacock and Paul Hatfield from the finance team both won in the 'Outstanding Innovation' category; the 'Customer First' individual winner was Paul Wicks, from the Sutton Bridge site, while the 'Customer First Team' gong went to the whole of the company’s Yaxley site: 'In particular, it was this team’s work around transferring the organic roots business from Forres to Yaxley that won it this accolade,' Frost said. 'Every person at the site was involved in ensuring a smooth transition of this important piece of business.'

There were joint winners in the 'Community Impact' award: a team from Chatteris, and a cross-site team. The Chatteris team raised more than £1,000 for a local school by running the Insane Terrain obstacle course. The cross-site 'Kitchen Garden Team' helped to restore the kitchen garden at Thorpe Hall, a hospice run by the Sue Ryder charity in Peterborough.
