Sainsbury's is investing in online

Sainsbury’s is to create 900 jobs at its new online depot in east London and trial same-day food deliveries in a major drive on e-commerce.

The new depot, located at Bromley-by-Bow, East London, is due to open this autumn and will cater for Sainsbury’s growing online grocery orders in London.

Developed at the former Royal Mail building, which is being refitted with automation technology, the new roles are a mixture of drivers, order pickers, product replenishers and managers.

Sainsbury’s director of online, Robbie Feather, said: “Demand for our online delivery service in the capital continues to grow. Our online orders are currently picked from supermarket stores across the UK and this model will continue, but the Bromley-by-Bow Centre will help us keep pace with demand in London, enabling us to fulfil another 25,000 orders per week.”

Same-day deliveries will begin with three stores in London and the South East, with shoppers who order by 12pm able to receive deliveries in four to six hours. The news comes as Amazon Fresh recently launched in the UK, with a full range of fresh produce now available from the internet giant.

The trial is expected to be rolled out to 30 stores in London by Christmas, as demand for multi-channel shopping is greatest in the capital, the retailer said.

Feather said: “As our online sales grow we are seeing an increasing proportion of orders placed for next day delivery, so this trial is a natural next step in delivering our strategy to help customers shop whenever and wherever they want.”

Sainsbury’s said online sales grew by nearly nine per cent last year and orders grew by nearly 15 per cent.
