Produce industry stalwart John Marshall has passed away aged 57 after losing a battle with cancer.

Marshall began his career in produce at Glass Glover, which he joined straight from school. In 1990, he left to become managing director at Francis Nicholls Sheffield, where he stayed until 1997 until taking up a role at Swithenbank in Bradford.

In 2001, Marshall joined Empire World Trade where he set up wholesale supplier and importer Growers Direct. He remained at the company during its acquisition by Univeg.

Known for his sense of humour and wit, as well as his knowledge of the fruit trade, Marshall has been described by friends as a “true gentleman”.

Colleague and friend Alan Scott said: “I have worked with John for 30 years since joining Glass Glover in 1986 and followed an identical path as we became friends as well as colleagues and I could not imagine a better boss to work for.

“He was much admired and respected by all whom he came in contact with during his career and will be greatly missed by all. A man dedicated to his job and career but no matter, he always put his family first and was foremost a family man who adored his wife Michelle and his daughters Amy and Chloe.”

FPC chief executive Nigel Jenney said: “I’ve known John for many years, he was a knowledgeable and valued member of the industry. Our thoughts and our prayers are with his family at this very sad time, he was a fabulous guy and he will be greatly missed.'
