The Fresh Produce Consortium has issued a guidance document covering caravan accommodation for temporary workers in the UK.

The guidance, which follows industry consultation and has been developed by a group of growers, suppliers, retailers and the FPC, includesinformation on legal requirements and benchmark indicators based on recommendations from a variety of sources, practical advice and experience.

The importance for growers of carrying out their own assessment based on the specific features of their site is recognised, and a self-help checklist is included to help growers assess the status of their caravan accommodation against the benchmark indicators.

“The aim of the guidance is to enable our industry to work together over time to improve conditions where necessary,' said FPC chief executive Nigel Jenney. 'We want to develop a practical tool to support growers and we welcome feedback on its application.

'We will be carrying out a formal review of this first edition at the end of the year to check if there are any aspects we can develop and to share more good practice.”

John Hardman, director of HOPS Labour Solutions, added: “HOPS have been delighted to be involved with this essential work facilitated by the FPC. Our industry must be cohesive and have collective responsibility to ensure UK farming leads by example in ethical standards and worker welfare.”
