Addition of WSA2 route has enabled Guayaquil terminal operator to expand its cargo volume
A new shipping service that links Ecuador with Asia has apparently led to an “unprecedented” increase in cargo volume handled by terminal operator Contecon Guayaquil (CGSA), which runs a multipurpose terminal at the Ecuador’s largest port Guayaquil.
In a statement, the company said the Asia–South America West Coast 2 (WSA2) shipping service – which was introduced in February 2025 – had led to a 46 per cent rise in volume, and enabled it to set a record for most cargo movements in a single vessel call.
With the increase in volume, WSA2 had positioned itself as the leading cargo route to Asia, the group added.
“The development reflects more than just good numbers,” it said. “It highlights CGSA’s successful efforts to establish a modern and world-class port facility that can adapt to market demand. It also reflects CGSA’s commitment to operational efficiency and excellence across all processes of the port’s operation.”
WSA2 is jointly operated by Wan Hai Lines, Pacific International Lines, COSCO Shipping Lines, and Evergreen.
