Onions New Zealand has encouraged the country’s growers and federal government to back a new development strategy, which would see the industry shift its export focus to Asia, according to Radio New Zealand.

The peak industry body’s chairman Michael Ahern said onions continue to be a solid export performer, with the value of New Zealand’s onion trade exceeding NZ$90m last season.

Europe remains a core market for New Zealand onions, however increasing compliance and transport costs in this region are cutting heavily into industry returns.

Consequently, Onions New Zealand is looking at market development opportunities in its neighbouring Asian region, calling on the New Zealand government to assist with phytosanitary access negotiations.

Ahern told Radio New Zealand China, South Korea, the Phillipines and India show particular potential for the industry.
