Early Pride, developed in the US, will be marketed under the Earlyna brand name
Valencia-based EuroVarieties Agronomic Management (Evam), the exclusive European licence-holder of the US-developed Early Pride mandarin variety, has joined Club of Protected Plant Varieties (CVVP) as a partner.
The move is expected to provide fresh impetus to the roll out of Early Pride, which will be sold commercially under the Earlyna brand.
“Earlyna can be used by all sublicensees and packers, facilitating its recognition at the point of sale and conveying a distinctive image to the end consumer,” CVVP said.
“With an optimal sales window (week 43/44 until just before Christmas), the process will be accompanied by a rigorous certification and labelling process that will allow for exhaustive control of this mandarin, whose cultivation in the Iberian Peninsula is limited to 2,000ha.”
US Early Pride is characterised by its flattened shape and its very early ripening, making it an ideal early mandarin for the leafy fruit segment.
“Among its many qualities are its good commercial performance, even over long distances, its skin, which is not very sensitive to Pixat, the absence (or very low presence) of seeds, even under cross-pollination conditions, and its resistance to Alternaria, validated through tests conducted in a laboratory authorised by the Plant Health Service of the Regional Government of Valencia,” CVVP said.
“Thus, with the incorporation of Evam into CVVP and the registered trademark Earlyna, US Early Pride presents itself as a valuable alternative for growers, filling a strategic gap in the market at the perfect moment.”
