Heightened security measures have trickled down to airline caterers but the situation has stabilised

Airline catering schedules have returned to a workable norm after a dramatic step-up in security levels at all UK airports last week caused restricted access to aircraft.

All major UK airports came to a standstill last Thursday after a thwarted terrorist plot to bring down planes between the UK and the US caused severe delays and prompted MI5 to raise the national threat of terror warning to “critical”.

Martin Riecken, vice president of corporate communications for airline catering firm LSG SKY Chefs, told FPJ the situation had been difficult with flights being severely delayed or cancelled but the company had managed to maintain its usual standard of service.

He said: “The situation has normalised. The heightened security measures are still in place and we have suffered from the delays but we reviewed our security procedures and everything is running fine.”

The crisis at the airports had a knock-on effect on other parts of the trade, with distribution vehicles caught up in major traffic jams, especially on the surrounding motorways
