The table grapes are the first in the world to have a deep red, skin-to-centre colour throughout the whole grape, according to Bloom Fresh.

The grapes also contain six times more anthocyanins, an antioxidant, than a traditional black-skinned table grape, according to analysis at the University of Murcia.

Launching in the late summer, Boombites Red Berry Grapes will be exclusively distributed through M&S nationwide, and Tesco and Ocado online for a limited time only.

The innovation behind the fruit is the result of over a decade of work by British company Bloom Fresh, the varietal innovation leader within Amfresh Group.

Dr Juan Carreño of Bloom Fresh said: “By naturally crossing some of the world’s best table grapes, which traditionally all have white flesh on the inside, with old grape varieties that have red flesh fruit but were historically only used for wine production, we have been able to bring a new fruit to the world.

“As a result, Boombites Red Berry Grapes are the first table grapes in the world to have a skin-to-centre colour with a deep red, vibrant centre pulp similar to that of a berry or cherry,” he added.

The company said the red berry category is poised to unlock incremental value for the fresh fruit aisle by recruiting non-grape buyers, re-engaging lapsed shoppers who want more from the category and trading up existing buyers.

Josep Estiarte, CEO of Bloom Fresh, said: “The opportunity to combine everything people love about grapes, with taste, colour and premium quality, is what makes this new category so exciting and what gives it broad appeal.

“This truly has the potential to pull all three core levers of category growth by driving penetration, frequency and value with a consumer proposition that is loved,” he added.

The launch comes as the latest UK National Diet & Nutrition Survey continues to show that most people fail to eat a rainbow diet of colour, hence missing out on nutrients, antioxidants and polyphenols.

Boombites Red Berry Grapes has also partnered with Heart Research UK to raise awareness of the lifestyle and daily dietary choices that can help support heart health.
