British flower industry concerned

The British flower industry is fearful that a late Easter means it will miss out on an important sales opportunity.

The Easter holiday period, from 22-25 April, leaves daffodil growers, who started harvesting their flowers for the fresh-cut market around two weeks ago, at a disadvantage in the marketplace.

Lincolnshire daffodil grower C Wright & Son (Gedney) Ltd’s director Adam Cunningham told FPJ at IFE in London, this week: “Our main crop will be harvested and sold way before the main demand comes on stream in Easter.

"It is not ideal for the market and the majority of our crop will go to the Netherlands, where they can take a consistent volume.”
