Capespan gets creative

Capespan has held a ‘Create a Story’ competition for children in support of the Schools Fruit & Vegetable Scheme (SFVS) and healthy eating.

This competition has seen schools in Capespan’s supply area of Sheerness, Kent, being offered the chance to write a story about Capespan’s promotional characters Arnie Apple and Olivia Orange.

Organised in conjunction with the Yum Yums Story books, which are a series of illustrated stories for three- to seven-year-old children, the schoolchildren’s stories had to include 10 set healthy eating words and a lead character that is either a fruit or vegetable - in a bid to help support the 5 A DAY message. The story line in each book is also intended to promote safe and responsible behaviour in children, like road safety and punctuality.

Cathryn Gull, Capespan’s SFVS account manager, said: “We were overwhelmed by the response. We had hundreds of entries; it was a great success.”

The NHS’ Kelly Garbutt chose a story from Green Lane Primary School, Middlesbrough, as the winner. The story is called Arnie and Olivia’s Picnic, in which Arnie Apple and Olivia Orange teach the “Sticky Sweets” character to be fit and healthy.

The Capespan characters Arnie and Olivia visited the school to award the prizes, along with Jess Porter, the author of the Yum Yums, who held a story-time session and a book signing. This was followed by a healthy and fun session, which included exercises with Arnie & Olivia.

“This was a fun and educational way of promoting healthy eating, and our partnership with Jess Porter really helped us get that message across,” added Gull.
