Bournemouth University has ambitious plans for its catering services

Chartwells, a subsidiary of catering giant Compass, has won a 10-year contract at Bournemouth University worth around £23.5 million.

The new deal, starting in September 2014, will see Chartwells continue to provide food and hospitality services to over 18,000 students and 1,700 staff at both of Bournemouth University’s campuses.

Having previously worked with the university since 1995, the new contract will see the company develop ambitious plans to transform the dining and café outlets at both the Talbot and Lansdowne campuses.

Plans also include the creation of outside eateries with a focus on Fairtrade produce and ethnic street-style cuisine.

“We are thrilled to continue working with Bournemouth University,” said Robin Mills, Chartwells managing director. “We have kept the student and staff experience at the heart of all our propositions and I think our willingness to bring innovation and fresh ideas to the table, along with our continual focus on service, has ensured we successfully retained this important contract.”

Stuart Laird, director of estates at Bournemouth University, said: “The University was very clear on our final decision and recognised the benefits that would come from extending our partnership with Chartwells.

“BU has set out on a journey of investment and development over the next five years at both the Talbot and Lansdowne Campuses. We needed to be confident that catering services will continue to evolve and that our catering partner will adapt and respond accordingly.”

Chartwells, part of Compass Group UK and Ireland, is the leading provider of catering and support services to schools, colleges and universities in the UK.

Compass Group PLC had an annual revenue of £17.6 billion in 2013, and employs more than 60,000 people.
