Colombia added its voice of dissent to Ecuador’s by filing a complaint with the World Trade Organisation last week against the EU banana import regime. The South American country, a neighbour of Ecuador’s and third behind it and Costa Rica in global banana export rankings, is asking the WTO to open consultation with the EU, complaining that the €176 a tonne tariff is “inconsistent” with the EU’s obligations under the GATT round of 1994.
