Colombians eyeing UK

Colombian grower and exporter Natturale is looking to export exotic fruit mangosteen to the UK.

The fruit, which has a purple shell that protects white segments of flesh, originates from Indonesia and was introduced to Colombia in 1935.

Natturale produces up to 350 tonnes of the fruit a year and produces its largest crop from December to mid-February, complementing the Asian season, which exports a substantial crop from June to July.

Natturale’s owner Alexandra Caro told freshinfo: “We produce a small crop in the summer that is totally taken up by our domestic market, but our large crop in the winter is too big and we would like to send it to the UK market. We are at Fruit Logistica to meet new clients and establish new trading relationships.

“We have an excellent product and we have been told that Colombian mangosteens keep their purple colour for longer and have a longer shelf life than the Asian fruit.

“We are looking to understand the needs of consumers and how best to serve the European market. We believe the UK market is a prime opportunity, as people are always looking for innovation and something different.”
