The success of Europe's biggest pumpkin has been put down to the benefits of natural soil conditioning and organic fertilisers.

EarthWorks Garden Products created the enormous squash with the help of student Chris Bonnett, who has been assisting with EarthWorks' trials of its new products.

EarthWorks' David Ledsham said: 'This is increasing evidence that our products are different and superior to alternatives currently available in the marketplace.' Bonnett added that he had been stunned by the speed in which pumpkins had grown as a result of the fertilisers. He said: 'It is absolutely amazing, these organic products have played a major role in producing this pumpkin.' The 668lb pumpkin is thought to be the largest in Europe, and has a circumference of 12 feet. To help those wishing to follow in EarthWorks' footsteps, Ledsham is giving away the pumpkin seeds on his website www.GiantPumpkinsOnline.com, so that other people can try them out for themselves.

Ledsham added: 'It is part of our marketing strategy to build up awareness of the products and get people talking about EarthWorks. Many people already share our enthusiasm and we plan for the range to be on sale in a number of retail outlets by the spring. Companies interested in stocking our range should contact us as soon as possible.'
