Geest has announced a 17 per cent growth in group sales throughout 2001 putting it comfortably ahead of the market growth, which grew by 10 per cent.

The group's fresh prepared foods sales have increased from £566.8 million to £663.8m and the company is reporting strong improvements from virtually all of its businesses.

Geest's total operating profits (before goodwill amortisation) also saw a 17 per cent rise from £37.9m to £44.3m.

Geest chairman Ian Menzies-Gow said: 'The results reflect our continued momentum and focus on fresh prepared produce in the UK and continental Europe. They also underline that consumer attitudes, demographics, lifestyle and economics all support further demand for our products.' Sales of wholehead salad and tomatoes increased by five per cent and the growth in prepared leaf sales was around 25 per cent increasing Geest's market share to 40 per cent.

Geest has also reported considerable growth in prepared fruit sales, which increased by 30 per cent due to the increased popularity of fruit salads as lunchtime snacks.

Prepared vegetables caused a problem for Geest last year. The group still holds a very small share of the market, having only one major UK retailer. Sales in this area saw a decrease in 2001.

Last year Geest took on five new facilities and launched 650 new or revised products.

Group expansion is forecast to continue with investments of £60m expected in 2002.
