Grocery prices in January fell to their cheapest level in over a year.
Research carried out by the shopping and comparison website mySupermarket.co.uk found that the cost of a basket of 35 popular products cost £85.80 in January, the cheapest recorded price in 13 months since the mySupermarket Groceries Tracker was launched.
The mySupermarket data follows recent news that sales in the grocery sector fell 0.2 per cent with Tesco, Asda and Morrisons all dropping market share.
The products that fell the most in price in January included bananas, cucumbers and mushrooms (all down 6 per cent) and grapes (down 9 per cent). Fresh peppers, however, increased in price by 6 per cent.
When compared to a year ago, the same basket of goods in January 2016 was 2 per cent lower than January 2015, a saving of £2.33 per shop.
MySupermarket’s Groceries Tracker monitors on a monthly basis the cost of the same 35 most commonly bought grocery products.
Kim Ludlow, MD of mySupermarket.co.uk, said: 'We are delighted to see the cost of weekly staples come down even further in price as this represents a great saving for shoppers across the UK. Although the continued supermarket price war is causing prices to fall, another outcome is regularly changing pricing across all departments and confusion for shoppers.
'Therefore, consumers must compare prices before they complete their shop if they are to make the most of these low prices.'
