JR Holland, a leading distributor in Northeast England and Scotland, has been acquired by San Francisco-based food technology company GrubMarket.

The deal marks GrubMarket’s first entry into the UK, as the company continues to expand its global market presence and drive technology adoption across the food supply chain industry.

GrubMarket is described as an ‘AI-powered technology enabler and digital transformer of the American food supply chain industry’.

JR Holland offers over 3,000 fresh products, including over 1,000 varieties of fruits and vegetables, with a fleet of 32 temperature-controlled vehicles through its distribution network.

Based in Gateshead and operating two locations in the Newcastle area, JR Holland employs over 120 people and its customers include restaurants, hospitality venues, foodservice operators, schools, NHS trusts and other public sector organisations.

John Holland, founder of JR Holland, said: “Joining GrubMarket marks an exciting new chapter for JR Holland, our employees, and our customers.

“GrubMarket recognized the strength of JR Holland and our experienced management team from the beginning. With GrubMarket’s technology, resources, and extensive industry network, JR Holland is exceptionally well positioned for long-term success,” he added.

Following the acquisition, JR Holland will retain its brand and continue to be managed by its leadership team, and will have access to GrubMarket’s suite of proprietary AI-powered technology.

Mike Xu, CEO of GrubMarket, said: “We are thrilled to welcome JR Holland to the GrubMarket family as our first acquisition in the UK.”

“Together, we will leverage GrubMarket’s AI-powered technologies, global network, and operational expertise to help accelerate its next phase of growth.”
