Grocery retailer Iceland has signed a five-year deal with Hays Logistics to manage plastic crates in its fresh food supply chain.

The crates will replace cardboard cartons, reducing the environmental impact and costs of the operations while improving product protection and presentation.

The new iniatiative will also contribute to improvements through adoption of the latest Efficient Customer Response (ECR) techniques. Karl Martin, buying director for Iceland, said: “We expect this initiative to improve the quality of the product in store for the Iceland customer, we also believe that returnable transit packaging provides significant environmental benefits.”
