Israeli herb growers stand strong

Israeli herb growers have renewed the majority of the product struck by recent sub-zero temperatures, and supply is expected to be back on track within three weeks.

All areas were hit when temperatures dropped to -3¼C for five days in January, followed by storms and 150km winds.

Both protected and open field sites - which make up some 60 per cent of Israeli herb production - were affected.

Herb supply has been halved in recent weeks, falling from 45 tonnes to 20-25t a day across all lines, according to Israeli exporter Agrexco.

The situation has cost Israeli growers an estimated €10-15 million.

Assaf Adar, product manager for herbs at Agrexco, told FPJ that it has been a difficult period for Israeli herb growers, but that their outlook was positive. He said: “The plants renew themselves quite quickly so we believe we will be back up to full supply between 10 days and three weeks.

“Most of the plants have been renewed and we are expecting a good crops for the spring.”
