Israeli potatoes battle exchange rate

Israeli potato sendings to the UK are so far in line with last year and volumes are increasing steadily, reports from Israel suggest.

But there will be some challenges to work through, including sterling weakening against the Israeli shekel by 34 per cent.

Ori Zafir, sales manager at Agrexco UK, told FPJ: “The weather in Israel is better than last year, with day temperatures of 20C, falling to 7C by night. These conditions will give rise to high yields…

“The UK currency became weaker against the Israeli shekel by 34 per cent, so if we sell at the same prices as last season the Israeli grower will receive 34 per cent less. In the present economic situation, it is not possible to ask our clients to raise the prices by 34 per cent, therefore we need to find the middle way to keep up supply to our clients, while also endeavouring to provide the growers with an income…

“The shortage of water in Israel and the currency exchange rates are the two main factors we will face this season.”

However, Israeli product quality is reportedly much improved on last season.
