Italian onions return

Italian grower and exporter Zanarini is homing in on the UK market now that it has pulled together two years of decision-making and spread its production across the country.

The Bologna-based firm produces some 5,000 tonnes of onions each year, including 2,000t of red onions and 2,000t of white onions.

Around 2,000t of red onions are packed in 9-10kg cartons and exported to the UK each year under the Zanarini brand.

However, bad weather in the growing period meant that sendings stopped this year.

Matteo Zanarini, commercial and operations manager at Zanarini, told freshinfo: “The most important item for the UK market is red onions, which we control from production through to packing.

“This year, we did not export to the UK because we concentrated our production in one area and lost some of the crop because of weather-related problems. Now, we have production through the length of the country, we have a better network of 20 growers and we are consolidating some of the choices we have made in the last two years. At the moment, we are working to improve productivity and yield, as well as lower production costs.”

The firm, which operates two packhouses for the export market and one for domestic supply, has been producing the Red Mach variety for three years.
