Production of chillies for export is steadily spreading into the Kilimanjaro area of eastern Kenya. The expansion has been made possible by the USAid-Kenya Horticulture Competitiveness Project and its partnership with Woni Vegetable Exporters & Importers. Woni has set up eight nurseries in the area

to train 350 farmers in production and post-harvest management of fresh chillies. The nurseries are establishing 12 acres a month under commercial production. Woni plans to buy the fresh chillies directly from the producers year-round for export to Europe and Middle Eastern markets.
