Lorry drivers have been classed among the most expert craftsmen in UK industry.

The range of knowledge and physical skills required for a haulier to do their job properly makes them a highly qualified and responsible individual who performs a job on which the rest of the country is dependent. This is according to information from the Freight Transport Association (FTA).

The FTA adds that not only does a haulier have expert driving skills, but has other knowledge concerning transport legislation, engineering, IT, dangerous goods, emergencies etc. For international drivers this knowledge extends even further.

Geoff Dossetter, head of external affairs at the FTA, said: 'The lorry is the safest vehicle on UK roads and UK drivers have a safety record to be very proud of. But such a record has only been achieved by the commitment of both employers and drivers to produce the very best results. Sadly, drivers do not always get the degree of public thanks and recognition to which they are entitled.'
