McCain pulls out of sweet potatoes

Potato giant McCain no longer has a presence in the sweet potato market after the withdrawal of a key product.

The company has been battling poor sourcing conditions and has made the decision to withdraw its McCain sweet potato with rosemary and garlic from all the UK’s major multiples.

The budget for the produce is being re-allocated across other McCain marketing activities and the firm hinted at a return to the category long term.

Bill Bartlett, McCain Foods corporate affairs director, told freshinfo: “Due to current soil conditions in South Africa, where we source the sweet potatoes, we have had difficulty maintaining the consistent high level of quality we are famous for.

“There are no longer any McCain sweet potato products available for retail.”
