Oner Group is set to move into two new categories this year by producing top fruit and tomatoes for the first time.
The Turkish supplier will plant 500 hectares of apples and pears and build a 24ha green house for tomatoes in the middle of Anatolia, as part of a $25 million investment.
The project has support from outside investors and has been planned for over a year.
Arman Armagan Oner of the Oner Group told freshinfo: “Something was missing in our lines; we have sold top fruit and tomatoes before, but we had never produced them ourselves. This is the first time we will produce either and we will be looking at a lot of varieties, including Gala apples and a number of different tomato varieties.
“The UK market will definitely come into it and the Middle East, in particular, is going crazy for Turkish apples.”
