Food packaging specialist Paragon is opening a new facility in Kenya to supply packaging for produce at source.

Paragon makes packaging for the fresh and chilled food sectors and the Kenyan facility is part of a wider global plan to manage packaging in situ for customers on four continents.

The change marks a shift from the industry-standard practice of air-freighting empty packaging. Paragon hopes it will reduce the carbon footprint of the end product.

The company’s Rick Smith said: “Our responsible packaging policies - such as reducing manufacturing waste and product weight - are already industry leading. Now, by moving production of our labels and flexible films closer to the food they will be packaging, we can reduce freight costs and help our carbon-conscious clients meet their environmental commitments.”
